Seattle Reign- the team that started it all. Before our beloved Reign FC, Seattle Storm (WNBA), and Sounders Women (W-League) there was Seattle Reign, a franchise in the American Basketball League (ABL). Seattle’s first women’s professional team. Kate Starbird and Kate Paye highlighted some of the big time names in women’s basketball to grace the maroon and gold jersey. Together they ‘Payved’ the way for women’s sports. It was not in any manner easy, but their vigilance and passion for the game was stronger than the naysayers. In ‘98 the ABL faded out with the launch of the WNBA in the previous year. The Seattle Reign (ABL) brand may have been put to sleep, but the ‘never say die’ mentality of the team was alive and well. Seattle was awarded the Storm in 2000 and Sounders Women took flight the following year. The passion shown in Seattle’s first professional women’s team (Seattle Reign) has been carried on throughout women’s sports in the Emerald City. Reign FC not only resurrected the brand but also the heart of those before them. How fitting a name as we watched this season unfold. SRFC never surrendered, never failed to give their absolute best day in and day out. Seattle’s first royalty were the Kates. Their reign of desire and love for the game is carried on through Queen Solo and HRF Jess Fishlock. Whether it’s the Reign of old or the Reign of new, this is for certain - the jersey may change, but passion never dies in Seattle. LONG LIVE THE REIGN! #ReignFacts
